Anglesey Chimney, Wales

Contract Value: £150M

Service: Structural and Demolition Engineering

The C&D team were asked to help demolish the largest remaining concrete structure in North Wales on behalf of our client Stena Holdings. Located in Holyhead Anglesey, the former aluminum works were being redeveloped by Stena Holdings in a multi-million-pound scheme. The demolition works compiled of removing a number of steel framed structures over the 120 Acre site, before eventually finishing with explosive Demolition of the 122m tall structure.

The work took several months of planning with local stakeholders including the temporary closure of the National Rail Line, local RAF flight paths and main A55 running through the island. Eventually to minimise disruption to the island a 25-minute window was given to the team in order to execute the explosion. With thousands of people gathered at a nearby safe viewing area and major TV Stations such as BBC & Sky News present the blast went to near perfection and was a huge success. The explosion itself took days of physical, pre-weakening exercises along with 156 drilled holes ready to house a combined 20kg of explosives.
